Spring time, busy time...

My dears it is soooo beautiful outside in Estonia, sun is shining almost every day.  I see how trees are getting greener in every morning...just lovely time! I would like to have a vacation now, but I can only dream about it. I have very busy time with work and also school. Some of exams are already done but half way is just ahead!

In school we have now also painting with watercolors and also a fashion illustration class....i will share with you photos after grading in the end of May.

This is a picture of me sitting in nice restaurant "Põhjaka" manor about 100 km from Estonian capital city Tallinn. Just lovely place, had very good experience, tasty food and also good service.

Dirt Bike Stencil Onesie

"I'm a CA girl born and Canadian girl bread- both my parents are from Alberta, Canada. I love mid-century design, comfy but flirty clothes, watching my taped TV shows and snacking. I've lived in 6 states & spent 7+ yrs working as an HR Director on Wall Street. After a particularly long 14 hr day I decided this really wasn't how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. I told my then-boyfriend & off to CA we went. My family is all on the West Coast and I wanted to be closer (it helped that he had a brother in CA as well). Fast forward 5 yrs and I am now a Domestic Goddess (my preferred title) working from home in So. Cal. and caring for 2 little boys (3yrs & 1yr), 1 husband & 2 dogs. I'm lucky most days if I get 1 complete hour to myself for my Max & Magnolia products, but I wouldn't change it. (ok, maybe I would ask for 1 more hour).

The elephant in the room - Stencil Onesie

I grew up with a mom who had some serious quilting skillz. She did show me a few tricks but I was way too impatient as a kid to absorb much of it. These days practice, a really good machine & sticking to straight lines helps. Just kidding, I'm much better now and actually make a bunch of clothes for my boys using their dad's old clothes. A fun girls night at my house a few years ago is what prompted me to start Max & Magnolia with a good friend. 2 friends showed us how to dye & paint clothes & voila an idea popped into my head. Hours were spent perfecting the dye process, trying out stencil designs, testing paint products & putting a list together of things we wanted in the shop. A lot of chocolate and diet coke was consumed :) Sadly, my friend moved away and couldn't dedicate time to the shop anymore. Thank goodness for FaceBook to help us keep in touch!

   

Rock & Roll

Onesies are my main product. I just loved when my little Max was crawling around with only a onesie on, but didn't love the options out there. Pacifier clips were added for the same reason. Most of my onesies are stenciled, but I am just starting to make my designs with heat transfer material & fabric appliqué, so stay tuned!

Looking for new inspiration. Whenever I stop by LA's garment district for more blanks I always take a quick stroll down at least one of the fabric streets. I love looking at the fabrics and picking up a yard or 2 for a new project. I also enjoy searching the globe (via the WWW) for cool ribbon or vintage fabric to use. Thinking of some cute chubby baby wearing one of my onesies puts a smile on my face.

In her free time she like to be with family, go to park, outdoor mall, whatever - so long as all tree of them are together. 

- Shoe shopping. Actualy, should say I "miss" shoe shopping. My collection (from my NY living days) has taken a real hit now that I spend my $ on the boys or supplies for my shop. 

- GNO's! I have a fun group of friends and we regulary try to get together fora a craft night or BUNCO night. If you are free we are having a Cinco de Mayo BUnco night at my place next week :)

THE VINTAGE SUPPLYCO Always checking back at this shop for some cool mid-century find for my home. The shop has a little bit of everything so you can basically do one-stop shopping. I also love the pictures, I totally feel like I'm in some 1960's home.

A Charade of Fashion

I would argue that one of the best movies made, from a fashion-lovers’ point of view, is the 1960s murder-mystery-romance classic Charade starring the gorgeously witty Cary Grant and ever so stylish Audrey Hepburn. This film features a Givenchy-clad Hepburn (think leopard pill-box hats, red wool coats and slender sheaths), as she parades around Paris. That in itself is reason enough to spend a couple hours curled up on the couch, popcorn in hand, in front of the TV. For when the weather does turn up, I adore the style of this LBD, a look right from the film. 

The clean, fitted silhouette, feminine neckline detail and modest hem length all contribute to the Audrey factor. Pair with a lovely light pink lipstick, an easy up-do and your favorite neutral pumps and voila! Style a la Hepburn! (Oh, and don’t forget the most important accessory: that charmer Cary Grant. * Sigh *, if only we could all have one of those!)

Many women do it with solitary beauty marks, but would you fake some freckles? Chloe S/S 2011 makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury thinks it's a good idea. They gave all the girls in the show that sun kissed glow. We think we must try this at least once. 

From Into The Gloss: Tilbury used MAC lip pencils in Cork andStone to dot them on one by one. She referenced Anita Pallenberg and music festivals, and the girls did have that free-spirited, slightly rock-chick look, especially with their cakey, jet black top-and-bottom lashes.

Love them or hate them the Royal Wedding WILL be the wedding of a generation. It is to quite elaborate lengths that this event has gone, and it's not only people in England that get to participate, thanks to social media the whole world will be watching. If you haven't yet set your channels to the Royal Wedding you can still tune into YouTube where they will be broadcasting live from the procession and the ceremonies, if you are early you can even upload a video message for the happy couple. Carole will be amidst all the commotion. We wish she had a twitter account to update us all on the things to come (hint hint ;) ). Few post ago I mentioned that I tried to make little post earrings. It was absolutely new experience for me. I was trilled with the result so I made a few more.

Small drop shape (tie shape) I used Japanese technique Mokume gane. I simply adore this technique because is full of surprise and I never know what will be  the final result and it is always surprise. And I like surprises :)

Previous Gowns Part 3: 1885 Blue Floral

I’ve started to catch up on documenting some of my older gowns, and this was the latest. I started this gown in 2007 & finished it in August 2008 for a Victorian tea.
I finally found the photo of a painting I’d printed off the internet that inspired my 1885 blue floral gown. With the help of a friend, I was able to get a scan of the photo to put back on my computer. *If anyone can identify the painting or painter, I’d really appreciate it. I printed this off my computer quite a few years ago and had a habit of not saving any identifying information with them.*




**Edited to add- the painting has been found! This was “Pruning Roses” by Robert James Gordon.

Besides loving the blue color, I liked the dark blue insert on the bodice and was happy when Truly Victorian came out with the French Vest pattern with the insert.









When I saw this fabric at Rosie’s Calico Cupboard, a quilt shop in San Diego, I knew right away it was perfect for this gown.





The painting doesn’t really show what the underskirt looks like but I decided I wanted to continue the solid color for it. I also didn’t have enough of the blue floral to make the skirt. The bodice was fairly easy to construct and the insert portion was even easier than it looks. I thought it was some complicated bit of hooks & eyes system to attach it, but instead it was just sides sewn to the front portion of the bodice to continue it to the center. Piece of cake! I used buttons & buttonholes as my closure on this, and used modern flat blue buttons. In hindsight, it also made it easier to alter the size because as I began losing weight, just moving the buttons over made that easy too. I had one oops while making it though. When I was opening the buttonhole up using my seam ripper, I pushed too hard, and I ripped right through the buttonhole and went an inch and half into the fabric. I did a very tight zigzag stitch over it in navy blue thread to close it, and I’ve been told it’s hardly noticeable. But I notice it.
As you will see in the photos of the completed gown, I was still in my early years of knowledge of how these were made and worn. The skirt in this era should be flat in front, with the excess in the back to go along with the bustle. And a little fuller petticoat wouldn’t hurt it either. But overall I still like it, and this pattern is very flattering.






I don’t have any decent photos of the hat since I’ve repurposed it into other colors for other gowns. At times I’ve worn an antique black wire frame bonnet with it but at some point I’d like to make one that looks more like the original painting.

Major Trouble Adult Plus Costume

I honestly preferred the Army Girl outfit. Be sure which would fit better. Both (Major Trouble Adult Costume and Major Trouble Adult Plus Costume) were thin lycra-like fabric that is not forgiving for any rolls and bumps, but a spanx-type undergarment was enough to make this costume work. However, the skirt on this costume was VERY short. May be not even enough to cover up your bum! You should wear leggings and you will feel amazing dressed in this on Halloween! You can wear bright red lipstick and curl your hair for a complete look! You can choose to use the jacket from the Army Girl costume with this costume to cover up a little bit. We would recommend this costume if you're willing to accept that there will be a few additions you'll probably have to make. But it is fun, comfortable, and you'll feel sexy in it! Good luck ladies!

It is SUPER short but you can get white hot pants and that would cute too it does not look inappropriate. Very well made and neither fabric nor accessories felt cheap or flimsy. Wear the hat that comes with it and complete your look. If you don’t like the hat that came with it then you can order for another sailor hat. You can also wear sailor shoes  and you will look PERFECT! I would definitely recommend this costume to anyone! You can wash it as well and everything will hold true to form. I can’t wait to wear the costume this Halloween!!

The only issue you can face that is the bust. You can wear a black tank top under it because the zipper ended about 2 inches below your bust line. I highly recommend the medium to women with larger hips and thighs.

You will be very pleased with this costume. You can order a large if you are 5'7" about 160lbs. In clothes size you can wear size 7-9 pants and medium sometimes large top. You can use one of your own belts of the same colour. The material is great and it's well made, probably the best quality costume you’ve ever bought. You can buy cuban fish net stockings to wear with it and then decide if you want to wear your sexy lace up combat boots or your bettie page pumps , both will look great.
